Wow, I almost forgot about Blogging on Blogging. Well, this unit was somewhat difficult for me especially when trying to figure out when to use the pick and choose formula(As they both are different). It was also a challenge to try and solve some of the problems that consisted cards, as in Poker, as it was very difficult to try and solve those questions. Although one part of the unit was very fun and mind-blowing, that was Pascal's triangle. All in all I had fought through this unit and studied very hard, for that monster of a test. So i better get to school now so that I can get on with the test. Good luck everybody.

Wow I almost forgot about this. It's already the night before the test and it's pretty late too so I'm pretty sure no one will see this. Ever since I got back from Banff I've been very clumsy and forgetful =S Moving on, one of my favorite units has come to an end. It's my favorite unit because it's not necessarily easy but it isn't exactly challenging either. Understanding the concepts and mathematical content in this unit can be largely based on understanding what the problem asks for, finding restrictions in the problem, and relating the problem to possibly an easier more simple less complicated problem. Being able to do that is real key to whether or not we can get high marks on this coming test, well that and studying =P But really, there isn't much concepts or formulas as there is content in the unit. So really all you need to do is know a few concepts and know how to apply them in different ways for each problem ahead. Good luck to all on the test tomorrow, may Buddha be with you =D

Hello everyone and good morning just getting back from work...This unit...was wow one of the hardest for me because you actually have to think and theres not really any formula to do the questions, (almost like probability) FYI: i HATE probability. But yeah, this unit somewhat frustrates me because there's very easy questions and there very hard questions and because everything in math is usually a trick =( its very easy to over think the question because you think ts too easy to be true. and Mr. K kept stressing to do all our homework and the unit would be easy ...well i did all mine except for 2 exercises that I'm doing now... and some of the stuff is still very hard especially the binomial theorem. I think that's enough complaining for on unit.

Hmm..

Another unit done and another test coming! Personally I thought that this unit is not hard and not easy at the same time. I kind of like the fact that you have to think about the problems first before you dive and solve it. I'm really not confident about solving those poker problems because I don't know how to play poker (haha) and I just don't understand it. But this morning I think I understand it better. Well I'm off to do my DEV and study for the test. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE.

Well another unit is done and it's time for me to BOB. For me this unit is really tough and i find it very confusing and challenging. By far the hardest problems are the poker problems because there are so many places to get confused on. Well tonight I'm going to study very hard and hopefully pull off a good mark. Well, well, well, once again I find myself sitting in front of my computer and thinking about the previous unit. I have enjoyed this unit actually (yes, I enjoyed MATH!) I cleary understood most of the most topics and was able to apply them accurately to the questions (with a little help from Chris, Vincent, Aichelle, and of course Mr. K.). I think this may be because it sort of deals with logic, in the sense that you have to think about the question and then design a model to use for it. Anyway, with the test a little more than 12 hours away, I have one thing to say: Good luck to all, but I hope that not many of us need it because we have all been studying hard and are now confident with the material in the unit. Also, I hope that there is a lot of poker questions on the test (I love those!) and very few that deal with the binomial theorem, Pascal's Triangle, etc.
KEEP PUSHING!!! (do I even have to say it any more?)

Well this unit was really cool. For me it was really easy. Hahaha.. Except for the problems with poker and some of the choose probems and.. I found thid unit very interesting because whenever we get into groups and do some exercises when its time to put up the answer its funny how everyone has thier own way answering a certain question. Its too funny. listen to our podcast! But in a way it kind of confuses me ... though i'll eventually get it with the help of the class *thumbs up* In this unit all you have to do is ..........

Yet another BOB. Well.. this unit has definately been challenging near the end. I guess it obviously shows from my pre test. -_-" But on the bright side, I have all of tonight to study even more! Out of everything we've learnt this unit, I think the poker probability part was the hardest for me. Either, it's difficult to begin with... or missing a majority of that class had a lot to do with it. Practice makes perfect, so hopefully I get better at it. :\ There isn't a lot to say. I just hope we all do really well on this test! I know I want to. (: Well, good luck everyone on the Counting test tomorrow morning. (: Oh.. and lets enjoy our afternoon off too. Tehe. =D

We have finished the unit on Counting. In this unit, I found it very interesting because it exercises the logical thinking of the students. In this unit, we learned how to use the "Pick" Formula and the "Choose" formula. These two formulas are NOT similar. These 2 terms may be synonyms, but they work differently. The "Pick" formula is used when the order of the objects matter without repetition. The "Choose" formula is used when the order of the objects doesn't matter. We should remember that these two formulas are DIFFERENT.

I hope everyone will study hard for the dreadful test. =D

This morning, we had our pre-test. Here are the answers.

1. 7 teams compete in a men's hockey league. If each team plays each other twice, how many games are necessary to complete the league schedule?

Since the 7th row in Pascal's Triangle is 64, which is the same as 2^6, we need to find which of these choices have the same answer...
Since (b) is 2^6, the answer is (b).

3. Suppose the last four digits of a telephone number must include at least one repeated digit. How many such numbers are there?

4. A multiple choice exam has 20 questions, each with four possible answers, and 10 additional questions, each with five possible answers. How many different answer sheets are possible?

This afternoon, we did our usual group workshops...

Here are the questions:

* the first digit is 9 in (a) because we can't use 0 as a first number. That would make it a 2 digit number instead. (eg. 024)
* the first number is 8 in (b) because we already used a number for the last one to make the digit odd. The next choice is 8 again because this time, we included 0.
* The first solution is for the digit to end in 5, the 2nd solution is for the digit to end in 0. (Both are divisible by 5) For the 2nd solution, the first number is 9 because 0 is in the last digit already, so we don't have to restrict it for the first number.

4. * In (a), the answer is 7! because we don't care about the order of the books.
* In (b), the answer is 5!3! because if we put the 3 French books in a bag, it is considered as "1". Therefore we have 5 objects to arrange. (5!) After that we remove the 3 books from the bag and multiply 3! to the answer. The 3 books can be arranged in 3 different ways.
* In (c), the question is similar to the "word" problems. Since there are 4 similar objects, they are non-distinguishable.

How many ways can BOB be arranged so that....

So yet again a test looms before us.... We have all been armed with the knowledge to slay the mighty Kuropatwian test. We will go forth pencils loaded, lucky rabbit's foot in hand (but not a real rabbits foot, because that's cruel) and hope for the best as that beast of a paper rears it's cover before us. It's menacing gaze striking fear and anxiety into our hearts... then kindly asking us if we bobbed and wishes us luck. HA, luck, it is of no consequence for the questions seem to be anti-calculator and anti-luck. But as I vowed in the beginning I will slay the mighty test and after I will rise above it and triumphantly say.... *YIPPEE!* Then smile and go to comp. sci.

Well maybe not this test. Feel pretty good but there are so many little itty-bitty things that catch me everywhere.

BOBING FOR MATH

This unit was difficult for me. There were formulas that you could use, but you don't need them you just have to think, VERY hard. Logic was part of it and honestly I'm not the brightest apple when it comes to logic. I constantly get the pick and choose formulas mixed up. I know I could have done better during quizzes and I should have done the homework because it's just like the trigonometric identities where you get good at it when you do lots of it. That sentence sounds funny! Overall, it was difficult and I'm just happy we're done with it. Hope everyone does well! See you all tomorrow.

Well hello hello again. Here I am bobbing once again. I thought this unit was okay. There were many unexpected quizzes! It sucks because some of us didn't do so well on them. So hopefully on our test we will get the better grade to boost up our marks. At first I thought this unit was easy then it kinda got hard with the pick and choose formulas. Then I understood those and then the binomial theorem dun dun dun! haha well that was quite confusing at first but it is quite amazing how everything works with the number phi. Good luck everyone ! Hope we all do well =)

MORNING:

First thing we started off with was a quiz that was on counting. The first question dealt with 3 positions with ten people and how they are arranged. we came up with 10*9*8 because there are ten people that can have one position, after that nine people can be assigned the second position since one is already assigned. And 8 because there are 8 people that can be in the third position. The second question was about how many words can be generated with the word CALCULUS. Since there are 8 letters it should be 8! However, there are two L's, two U's, and two C's which are all non-distinguishable objects because we can't tell the difference between the doubles. So, it is 8!/ 2!2!2!. 2! are the U's, L's, and C's since we can't tell them apart. Question 3 the answer is (7-1)! which is equivalent to 720. That's because since 7 people are sitting in a circle and one person could be the point so 6 others sit around. Question 4 the answer is 4!2!2!2!2! because there are four couples that could be arranged and two people in the four couples and they too can be rearranged. The answer for question five is 1152 because if the men and women alternate then it would look like this

4 would go first because there are 4 men and 4 in the second because there are 4 women. 3 would go into the third because of 3 men left and 3 for women and so on. The next line is the same but a woman first. They both equal 576. To get the answer you add 576 + 576= 1152. The sixth deals with simplifying expressions. We did a bit of the new unit.

AFTERNOON CLASS:

We did a bit more work on the Binomial Theorem. We noticed patterns all over the place. We learned how to find whatever term we want. If we were not given the X^n than we could find out what term it is. We could find the term using a system of equation! If you want to see more of what happened in class click here for more details! Seeing that the test is coming up, it's time to blog on the blog once more.

This unit included its share of interesting and difficult times. I must agree with Mr. K that homework was definitely essential for this unit, in my opinion. Most of the questions had their own elements that may have related to other questions but were not exactly the same.

I find that the most difficulties I have with this unit is the race against time. There are so many ways to think about each question that it seems as though I'm playing against time to find the path that will lead me to the solution.

Also, besides the more simple combinatorics word problems, I don't think that I'm extremely comfortable with the binomial theorem yet. Only time will tell because I have yet to finish my homework and we still have pretest day tomorrow.

This is my unit! I think I've clearly zoomed through this unit like a bowl of rice. If the test is as simple as the quizzes, we all should do fine right? I myself am tired of bombing on tests, so I'm studying all tonight tomorrow and Monday night. If I don't get at least an 80%, I'm gonna cry. I hope you all do great as well. Good luck.
